Carved by hand, made to last

Every piece of lettering begins with careful consideration of the stone, the layout and the style of lettering required. I work with natural stone selected to suit the character of the property or setting, taking into account the size, proportions and position of the finished piece.

Traditional letter cutting is a slow and deliberate process. Each letter is individually marked out and cut by hand using a hammer and letter-cutting chisel, giving the finished inscription its own character and subtle variation. Rather than looking machine-made, the marks left by the tools become part of the finished piece.

Whether creating a simple house name, a family inscription or a completely bespoke piece, I take care over the spacing, proportions and finish of every letter. The result is a permanent feature that can become part of a building, garden or landscape for generations.
